Charlotte Richardson Interviewed By Starting Line 1928
Picture
WRCC Board member and Vice President Charlotte Lettis Richardson sat down with Cindy Kuzma, a freelance writer out of Chicago, to discuss what women's competitive running was like in the 1970s. During the interview, Charlotte recounts her experiences running and racing from that era.

Starting Line 1928 is an oral history project set out to document the stories of the pioneers of women’s distance running in their own voices. Cindy Kuzma is part of their leadership team and regularly writes for Runner’s World, Women’s Running, SELF, and more; She is co-author of Breakthrough Women's Running: Dream Big and Train Smart and Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries, and co-host of The Injured Athletes Club podcast.

Title IX
Almost 50 years ago, on June 23, 1972, Title IX of the education amendments was enacted into law, stating, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Here are some facts on how this important law changed girls' and women’s sports:
  • In 1972, just over 300,000 girls and women played high school and college sports
  • In 1972, women’s collegiate sports received just 2% of the college athletic budgets
  • By 2012, the 40th anniversary, over 3 million girls (a tenfold increase since implementation) were participating in high school sports
  • In 2016, one in every five girls in the U.S. played sports; before passage of Title IX the number was one in every 27
  • Participation of women in sports has risen every year since Title IX’s passage
  • The 2016 Rio Olympics saw the largest group of women Olympians in history—292 women versus 263 men (in 1972 only 90 women out of 428 athletes were on the U.S. Olympic team)
  • Surprisingly, what Title IX accomplished for girls and women in sports, the opposite was true for women coaches. Prior to 1972, 90% of the coaches working with girls and women, were women. Today, only 42.2% of D1 Head Coaches are women coaching women's teams.
Although Title IX had other aims, its most famous and lasting legacy will always be its impact on expanding opportunities for women and girls in sports.
