Runner2Runner started our first two running programs in 1998 (Forest
Park Elementary and West Sylvan Middle School) in Portland, Oregon.
Since that time, we’ve grown to include 150+ elementary and middle
schools in Oregon, Michigan, Missouri, Texas, and Washington. Our
success in transforming young children’s lives and building stronger
school communities can be demonstrated by the number of our athletes (>5,000) who continue to run for competition (professional, 25 D1, 2 D11, 4 D111, 2 community college) or pleasure (hundreds) once they’ve graduated high school.

We offer cross country, track and field, Lil’ Striders (introduction to running), Runner2Runner+ (performance training) in a safe, positive and supportive environment. Our athletes learn discipline, progressive training, overall fitness, and nutrition during our workouts, instilling good habits that last a lifetime.

Athletes typically practice 1-2 times a week and participate in play days and area meets (if available). All Runner2Runner programs are offered year-round. Athletes pay a registration fee and receive a free performance shirt along with experienced coaching instruction. Coaches undergo background checks, pass SafeSport classes, and are insured (along with team) by USA Track and Field.

Runner2Runner provides a fun and creative atmosphere for children allowing them to forge new relationships with others and encourage self-growth. Additionally, our young athletes learn the importance of patience and perseverance toward goals as well as competitive skills.

Our goal is instilling a lifelong love of running into each one of our athletes.

New Interval Training Website

Britain's Peter Thompson, who currently lives in Eugene, OR, celebrates his 53rd year as a coach.

"Since 1978 Peter has concentrated on the middle and long distance events where he formally innovated the "New Interval Training" method in 1995, after developing and using the method from 1975. In addition to coaching his own squads of international athletes, he has coached coaches and coached athletes on camps and clinics in 51 countries and representing over 165 of the countries of the 214 Member Federations of the IAAF."

He developed "Lactate Dynamics Training" (1994) and, then as he now calls it, "New Interval Training" (1995).

"When people ask me about the history of Lactate Dynamics Training (1994) and the New Interval Training (1995) I answer that it really is a reflection of my own development as a coach. Like many of the best innovations, they were developed over a considerable period of time, being born out of intuition, followed by the twin pillars of experimentation and success. Much later, the intuition and practice came to be supported and refined by stumbling upon and recognizing the implications of the findings and new knowledge that had come from Dr George A. Brooks’ ground-breaking scientific research on lactate metabolism." - Peter Thompson

His website newintervaltraining.com is a wealth of knowledge on how his training works and how it has benefitted the many athletes he has coached over the years. It also provides examples of other international coaches and world-record breaking athletes who have successfully used this method. This concept is well worth incorporating into a coach's training blocks.
